These are photographs from the Platinum Jubilee beacon lighting event that the Parish Council took part in.

As Hadrian’s Wall runs through the village of Newtown, the parish council was asked to be part of the Hadrian’s Wall group of beacons which were lit slightly later at 10pm, all other beacons in the UK were lit at 9.45pm.

The beacon was lit  on Newtown village green by Nesta Cowper, one of the parish’s eldest residents (and ex parish councillor) following parish councillor Carol Robinson playing Majesty on the cornet.

This is the first time Irthington PC has taken part in a beacon lighting event and it was well received.
